Kids Fishing Derby 2011


Schroon Lake, NY Seventy seven young anglers participated in last Saturday's Schroon Lake Kids Fishing Derby, held each summer for children under twelve years of age. The event is co-sponsored by the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club and the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce. Prizes were awarded in multiple categories. The largest catfish was landed by Tyler McLaughlin of Latham, NY. Val DeCesare of Glenville entered the largest crappie. Brennan Halbohm of Balston Spa entered the largest rock bass. Skyler Johnson of Brunswick, NY, entered a sunfish that won that that category. The largest perch was caught by Noah Armstrong. Schroon Lake's own four year old Shane Aikan entered the largest fish of the tournament, a 2.4lb largemouth bass. Entrants who landed the three largest fish in each of the six categories were awarded rod and reel combo outfits.

Ice Fishing Derby 2011

On March 5 & 6 the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club held its annual Ice Fishing Derby. 412 hardy fishermen braved the rain, snow, wind and cold weather to catch what they hoped would be a winner. Door prizes were awarded hourly each day and the final derby winners are: Northern Pike; 1st place, Jim Derrick of Hadley, NY (11.90 lbs); 2nd place, Jim Porter of Chestertown, NY (11.87 lbs.); and 3rd place, Kaleb Bruce of Ticonderoga, NY (3.77 lbs.). Lake Trout; 1st place, Daniel Seymore of Mornsonville, NY (7.83 lbs); 2nd place, Mike Gibson of Chestertown, NY (6.91 lbs); and 3rd place, Daniel Mullen of Ballston Spa, NY (6.61 lbs). Salmon; 1st place, Larry Rabine of Fort Edward, NY (6.02 lbs); 2nd place, Mike White of Lake Luzerne, NY (4.57 lbs); and 3rd place, Bridget Thomas of Chittenago, NY (3.98 lbs). LARRY RABINE’S 6 POUND SALMON MIGHT WELL BE A RECORD FOR SCHROON LAKE. The biggest Perch was won by Kay Dorrah of Queensbury, NY (1.63 lbs). The biggest Pickeral was won by Rick Daughty of Cumberland, ME (2.72 lbs). The Pack Basket raffle was won by Wayne Welch of Schroon Lake, NY. The Carhart Jacket was won by Matt Savarie of Severance, NY. The Jet Sled was won by Nicole Plumstead of Schroon Lake, NY. The Portable Shanty was won by Bill Sutfin of Schroon Lake, NY. And, the Ice Auger was won by Michael Buysse of Keene Valley, NY. The Club members wish to thank all the participants and all our volunteers who help make this a very successful derby.
